Seit langem bekomme ich mal wieder die Scheibe einer Band, die sich dem technischen Deathmetal verschrieben hat und nicht dem momentan so angesagtem Brutal-Deathmetal: „Manifests Of Human Existance" von ECHIDNA. Kurze Klug-Scheisserei: Echidna ist eine Gestalt aus der griechischen Mythologie, die zur Mutter zahlreicher Ungeheuer wurde. Und eben solch ein Ungeheuer erwartet den Hörer dieser Scheibe. Dabei handelt es sich um das zweite Album der Band aus Griechenland, das erste „This Suffering" erschien bereits 2006. Sowohl der griechische "Metal Hammer", als auch das englische Magazin "Zero Tolerance" kürten eben dieses Debüt zu ihren Demos des Monats.

Was einem nun auf dem Zweitwerk geboten wird, ist Technik pur. Die Songs bewegen sich auf höchstem technischem Niveau. Hier und da werden auch griechische musikalische Spielereien benutzt und verpassen dem Sound damit einen ganz eigenständigen und wiedererkennbarem Charme. Leider hapert es an der Produktion. Das mag man der Band aber verzeihen, da alles selbst produziert worden ist und man noch kein Label im Rücken hat, das einem unter die Arme greift. Das sollte sich nach diesem Werk aber ganz schnell ändern.
Zweiter negativer Aspekt: einige Songs wirken zu lang, sodass man irgendwann ein wenig das Gefühl bekommt, dass sich die Band in ihren Songs verloren hat. Deswegen wirken die letzten Stücke irgendwie überladen, obwohl jeder für sich wirklich gefällt. Manchmal stimmt leider doch, dass weniger mehr ist.

Die Griechen beschreiben ihre Einflüsse und ihren musikalischen Stil als eine Kombination aus den technischen Skills von ATHEIST und NECROPHAGIST, den catchigen Riffs von DEATH, der Vertracktheit von MESHUGGA, CYNIC's avantgardistischen Melodien und zuletzt GORGUTS psychedelisch experimentellen Riffs. Keine weiteren Fragen, diese Aussage kann ich getrost so unterschreiben.

ECHIDNA sollten definitiv Zugang zu einem breiteren Publikum finden, weil hier sonst sprichwörtlich Perlen vor die Säue geworfen werden. Wegen der zwei negativen Punkte, die mir persönlich aufgefallen sind, schneidet das Album leider eher durchschnittlich ab. Ich kann es aber, nein, muss und will es aber jedem wärmstens empfehlen. Vor allem, weil die Band ihr Werk für nur sieben Euro auf ihrer Homepage anbietet.

Technischer Death Metal ist augenblicklich eher schwer zu finden, da die meisten neuen Bands sich doch lieber in der Gegend herumprügeln. So ist es also mal ganz angenehm, wenn eine Band wie ECHIDNA sich diesen Tugenden annimmt und Musik mit Tendenz in Richtung ATHEIST, DEATH oder GORGUTS verbreitet.

Und Technik wird auf ''Manifests Of Human Existance'' dann auch gleich ganz groß geschrieben. Hier wird Gefrickelt und Gerifft was das Zeug hält, was vom Prinzip her eigentlich gar nicht mal so schlecht ist, nur dass die Griechen es einfach übertreiben. Einfach ist nicht gut genug. Es muss hier noch etwas reingeschoben werden und da kann noch was dazu gepackt werden. Das hat dann zur Folge, dass die Truppe ihre Songs bis kurz vorm Erbrechen überlädt. Da passt wirklich auf kein hauchdünnes Pfefferminzblättchen mehr rein.
Dennoch bieten ECHIDNA gute Ideen und bleiben nicht bei Ihren Ansätzen stehen. Dieses musikalische Monster macht es dem Hörer zwar nie leicht, aber dass will man wohl hier auch nicht.

Sicherheitshalber sollte der Tech Death Freak hier aber besser reinhören, denn erstens gibt es hier nichts wirklich Neues, das aber auf hohem Level, und zweitens krankt das Album gehörig an der Produktion. Sicher, man muss Abstriche machen, da es sich hier um ein selbstproduziertes Werk handelt, aber weniger Bass würde die Feinheiten im Hintergrund besser zur Geltung kommen lassen und man müsste nicht immer so angestrengt hin hören, um hinter der Murmelwand was zu finden.
Trotzdem, reinhören lohnt auf alle Fälle, trotz der beiden Negativpunkte.

Πρώτος δίσκος για τους Θεσσαλονικείς Echidna χωρίς όμως αυτό να σημαίνει ότι εμφανίζονται τώρα για πρώτη φορά στο κοινό. Την μπάντα την γνώρισα πολύ μετά από το πρώτο της (και μοναδικό έως τώρα) demo “…This Suffering” (2006) το οποίο αν και κινείται σε καλό δρόμο δεν μπορεί να συγκριθεί σε καμία περίπτωση με την πρώτη επίσημη κυκλοφορία του συγκροτήματος.

Οι Echidna έρχονται στο Manifests Of Human Existence σαφώς πιο ανανεωμένοι και πιο φρέσκοι, ακολουθώντας έτσι το ρεύμα της εποχής που, καλώς ή κακώς, επιτάσσει έναν πιο prog/technical μπούσουλα στις συνθέσεις των συγκροτημάτων. Έτσι κι εδώ μιλάμε για έναν δίσκο που έχει ως βάση το death, αλλά στην ουσία ξανοίγεται σε όλο το φάσμα της μουσικής σκηνής. Δηλαδή στον πυρήνα μπορείς να βρεις τους Αtheist, και τους Necrophagist, ενώ την ίδια στιγμή μπάντες όπως Dream Theater, Opeth και Meshuggah να αποτελούν τους δορυφόρους στις επιρροές των συνθέσεων. Τώρα κατά πόσο αυτός ο πόλεμος των άστρων μπορεί να δέσει, είναι ένα καλό ερώτημα. Κατά την ταπεινή μου άποψη κάτι τέτοιο επιτυγχάνεται σε έναν πολύ μεγάλο βαθμό. Έχουν καταφέρει, δηλαδή, να προσαρμόσουν επιτυχώς μέσα στις ακραίες συνθέσεις τους, ακουστικά όργανα, και industrial/ambient μελωδίες, αφήνοντας ίσως ελάχιστα επιχειρήματα για να κατακρίνει κάποιος αυτόν τον πολυδιάστατο δίσκο. Και για να γίνω πιο συγκεκριμένος, αναφέρομαι στο “Tractatus Cerebri”, που διαιρείται σε τρία, κυρίως ορχηστρικά μέρη. Ουσιαστικά η μπάντα πειραματίζεται κάτι παραπάνω από αρκετά, χωρίς να μπορώ να πω με τα σιγουριάς αν σκόπιμα θέλει να φέρει τον ακροατή σε μια κατάσταση σύγχυσης, ειδικά στο actIII.

Από την μεριά της παραγωγής τώρα, έχει γίνει πολύ καλή δουλειά με το μπάσο και τα τύμπανα να ακούγονται αρκούντως επιβλητικά. Τα φωνητικά ακολουθούν καταπόδας, δίχως να αφήνουν περιθώρια για το οποιοδήποτε αντίλογο. Οι κιθάρες στα ρυθμικά κυριολεκτικά είναι ένας οδοστρωτήρας που δεν αφήνει τίποτα στο διάβα του. Εκεί που μας τα χαλάνε είναι στα solo περάσματα όπου ακούγονται έναν κλικ πιο πριμαριστές από ότι θα ήθελαν (αχ αυτό το actIII).

Κλείνοντας θα ήθελα να προτρέψω το ακροατή που έστω και κάτι από τα παραπάνω μπορεί να του κινήσει το ενδιαφέρον, να τολμήσει και να παραγγείλει το Manifests Of Human Existence ή τουλάχιστον να ρίξει ένα βλέφαρο στο πολύ καλό video clip, για ένα από τα καλύτερα tracks του δίσκου "In Fathomless Depths".

REVIEW

Sometimes ourselves are caught by a big surprise from the beginning, when they are about to encounter things and in this case, sounds unfamiliar to the mind.

So, when an album starts with a part that could have been included in the next album of Death, and it also brings you flashbacks and memories of when you started listening to albums like ”Individual Thought Patterns” or ”Symbolic”, then you can surely tell that there’s something special going on with this band. Echidna is a band that has absorbed all main influences from great bands besides Death, being either Atheist, Cynic, even Meshuggah. That’s the reason why their first attempt entitled ”Manifests Of Human Existence” is an album that will stand as a landmark for the whole Greek scene in the future.

From the first moments of ”Whispers”, you are facing a focused attack, made to invade deep inside your brain cells and cast them inactive to do anything but be obedient to the band’s sound. ”Political Sickness in D# Hijaz Kar” makes matters worse, and completes a dynamic duo with which the album enters in the best possible way. The rhythm section crushes bones and skulls, the production is simply amazing and if nobody knew, he would swear it is Steve Digiorgio playing the bass guitar on this recording. We’re dealing with a band that believes in its potential, and the next duo of ”Grieving Silence” and ”Dogma Of Cain” proves this right. Especially in the last, the creepy outro with the successful samples creates a pretty grim atmosphere.

Next is the ”Tractatus Cerebri” trilogy, a demanding track divided into three parts, where the band experiments as much as possible, with ”To Be” being the prelude to the relentless outburst of ”Driven Into”. There, the band can’t hide the Cynic influences, and delivers us the most brutal part of the album after the initial riff, with the blast getting along with the voice of Theo Deligiannidis, who doesn’t seem to ease his aggression for a moment during the 52 minutes the album lasts. ”A Twisted State Of Mind” closes this trilogy and has the role of the outro, preparing the ground for ”The Pendulum”. Heavy riffs, rough and tough drumming and still you can’t stop banging your head from pure surprise and obsession.

The last two songs ”Human Serpent” and ”In Fathomless Depths” reveal the point the band can reach in the future. This is an album made in the present but heading for tomorrow’s aesthetics. It’s a pure death metal album, with amazing performance from all members and with much room for experimentation inside the songs, including movie samples, traditional Greek organs such as the tzouras, speed and mood changing from song to song and in overall, a work that was made with a lot of effort and hard work and is characterized by quality. Especially if you happen to see them live, you will understand how much better the songs work out. They play them for a lot of years, that’s why the result is very solid and convincing.

I really feel great when new bands show signs of being able to drive their music to a high level. You can tell this for Echidna from the first moment. And also, what I believe is that they can do even better in the future, as their sound is rather demanding and they will try to do the best to surpass their debut. For the time being, I suggest you trusted them as much as you can. They won’t let you down and they might make you feel that some of the groups you used to love back in the day, are revived by their music. Chuck Schulidiner may have left us for a better place, but his spirit is still somewhere around and makes people try and give their best, so we will never forget him. He might be smiling up there with this work. The metal flows in the band’s veins. Don’t miss them!

 

INTERVIEW

Echidna has been one of the bands that struggled a lot in order to become who they are today. After hard work, losses and line-up changes, they finally managed to release their first full length album, entitled ”Manifests Of Human Existence”. The singer of the band Theo Deligiannidis gives us all the answers about the hidden magic in their music, and what is about to follow next.

First of all, we’d like you to introduce the band to the readers of Metalpaths and give us a short bio of your presence so far.

Echidna was formed in 2005 with a five-piece line up. We worked on our own material and recorded our demo titled “This suffering” in 2006. After that we continued with new songs only to start the recording of our debut album “Manifests of Human Existence” that was released a few months ago. In the meantime Echidna have given several live shows in Greece and abroad.

Finally, your first album is out. Tell us how long it took you to create it and if you are satisfied with the final result.

Due to personal setbacks the creation of this album took more time than we initially expected. We began working on new material after finishing the recordings of the demo so the entire production lasted 4 years more or less. Nevertheless, we’re satisfied with the result, as both the musical and lyrical part of the album fill our expectations for creating a metal album that talks about the modern human society.

I like very much the song titles. Can you give us some details about the lyrical concept of the songs?

The lyrics are the part of a general concept that revolves around the idea of the human mind and how the latter reflects on social behavior and existential pondering.

Name some of your personal and general influences of the band. To me, the album has the aura of Chuck Schuldiner’s presence in many moments.

It is true that Death is probably the most important of our influences. We’re mostly influenced by the early death/prog scene with bands such as Cynic and Atheist but also by modern death metal bands like Meshuggah, Textures and Necrophagist.

How easy or difficult is for a Greek band to chase its dreams and do something new and special nowadays? Which other bands from our country could achieve something by their music?

During the past years it was not so easy for a Greek metal band to be more widely known. The musical culture in Greece does not have enough space for metal, it’s even worse for extreme metal. Despite that, we believe that the Greek metal audience is nowadays more “friendly” to Greek metal bands, and the metal scene itself evolved, as many Greek bands have become very professional with their work. We don’t want to name specific bands because they’re too many and we may forget someone. But the fact is that there are many greek bands that play really good and have their own unique musical style. The Greek metal scene definitely deserves our attention!

As far as I know, there are some changes in the band. Also, there’s a sad story behind the album. Would you like to share these with us?

Indeed, there has been a change in the line-up. Former bassist Nikos Metaxas left the band for personal reasons hence Antonis Roditis joined us in his place. As for the rest, we suffered the loss of a person that had worked with us very closely since the recordings of the demo. Akis Delilampou was a very good friend and co-producer of both our demo and album. Akis loved music. He and his band, Trancending Bizarre?, were working on their second album and also helped lots of bands, including us. We all miss you brother.

The band is known for its strong live presence. Which are the plans now that the record is complete? Where are you going to focus the most?

We are bound to continue giving live shows as often as we can in the future. It is something we really enjoy. We are in the process of scheduling some gigs for the upcoming autumn and winter but we don’t have any official dates yet. In the meantime, we are also trying to give some focus on new material and in time plan our next release.

You have personally helped a lot of bands doing some session work on them. Is music a link that connects people in your opinion? How much important is unity between bands of the same city, country, etc?

We believe music bonds people more than any other form of art. Through music people socialize, find common interests and share thrills that would otherwise be very rare. Music finds no limits, no boundaries or borders. Unity between musicians is very important and should aim for the best. Of course it is easier to support on a neighborhood/town basis but in progress bands should support each other any way they can no matter how far they are.

Are there any ideas for a second album, or is it too early to speak about this?

It’s too early to tell much about it. We do have new pieces that we are working on and we think we’re on the right track. Yet we’re far from saying that anything is complete or nearly complete.

Tell us some details about some samples in the album and also some bizarre parts of your music, incliuding also traditional Greek organs. How much space can a band have in its music to combine various parts and rhythms, without losing its personal identity?

The album includes samples from the Polanski’s film “The Tenant” in the three-part piece “Tractatus Cerebri” which were written about the subject of the film. Thus we thought it would be nice to add some samples in an attempt to create the atmosphere we wanted. Also “Dogma of Cain” includes a part of philosopher’s Jiddu Krishnamurti speeches at the very end. The traditional Greek instrument we used in the song “Political Sickness in D# Hijaz Kar” was the “tzouras”. It is actually a smaller version of the traditional Greek bouzouki. When we discovered that the song’s main theme was, unintentionally, composed on an Arabic scale called hijaz kar (hence the title) we came up with the idea of creating a small part inside the song that presents the middle-eastern flavor of Greek folk music. There is no limit to what a band can combine into their music as long as that fits with the flow of the compositions and adds some meaning to the music. At least not for us.

Which is Echidna’s vision for the future? What would you like to achieve and how would you like to be remembered one day?

Playing your own music and sharing it with other people that enjoy your music as much as you is a unique feeling that can’t be described. Also the process of making new songs fills your personality as the creativity is a very important aspect of the human nature. These feelings are what we want to keep as long as we can. If we are to be remembered one day, we’d like to be known as the band that plays…bizarre things, from the bottom of their hearts.
